Here is a quick little epic horror device, which I probably heard in Jerry Goldsmith’s “The Omen”. It’s short fragment of a composition of mine called “Book of Leviathan”. It’s very effective in conjuring up a sense of extreme horror and invocation.
The trick here is to use the most powerfull range of the different orchestral instruments and choir.
The harmonic colour is achivied through a mixture of chords between sections and the use of a lot of diminished chord shadows. In order to get this powerfull amazing orchestral sound it’s necessary the involvement of all orchestra. The brass play counterpoint melodies which gives an interest to the static harmony.
